Everyone makes mistakes, and I forgive people for one or two mistakes that are typos or hasty grammatical errors, but repeated and blatant disregard for the rules and intricacies of the English language are endlessly frustrating. There is nothing like a misspelled word or dismal grammar to make me royally upset. I do NOT understand bad spelling and awful grammar. Yes, I am aware that my computer will tell me when I have misspelled a word, and I am aware that misspelled words "still get the point across." However, arguments such as these are lazy and illogical. My computer can also add and subtract numbers. It can even divide and multiply. Does that mean I should not know how to add and subtract and divide and multiply? That's just one example. There are many others. In the end, all the arguments against good spelling are just terrible excuses. I believe that proper spelling is an absolute necessity. I don't claim to know how to spell EVERY word, but I know how to spell the ones I use, and if I don't, I LEARN how to spell them before using them. It is a simple thing to do, learning to spell. I may be alone in this, but when people show an inadequacy in spelling or grammar, it makes me think they are inadequate in other aspects of memory-based intelligence. I am not saying they actually ARE lacking in intelligence, but I definitely have tons of suspicions, at least initially.
Here are some very common mistakes that literally make me want to hurt myself:
"are" instead of "our" and vice versa... Example: Are project is going to be good.
"their" instead of "there", "they're" and all the various mix-ups with those words... Example: They're massive house is over their next to there expensive car.
As you can see, those are all grammatical errors. Spelling errors are also very common, but I can't bear to type any. Additionally, they are much harder to think of because almost any word can be misspelled. I was prompted to write this after reading a terribly misspelled word, but I apologize if anyone who can't spell is offended. Some people are annoyed by mismatched fashions or incomprehensible accents; I am annoyed by bad spelling and bad grammar. Very annoyed. I actually cut this post short because it made me quite frustrated and angry just thinking about the subject.
Well people are pretty lazy, not in general, just a good amount. I don't mistake are for our or there for their or any silly things like that. I do tend to mispell words though, I usually find that I did mispell something way after the time that it occured. But it's usually not simple words. . . half the time I just spell something the way it sounds, which is usually correct, but I tend to mispell "ridiculous" all the time.
ReplyDeleteOne word I ironically have some trouble spelling is the word "misspell". I always think it should have one "s". I also put the punctuation after the quotation as seen above in informal documents because it is moderately difficult to get the point of the quote if the punctuation is in it.
ReplyDeleteFor example, I will write the following random sentence. The fast cat got slapped and then said "meow!" It is clear that the cat was saying "meow" loudly. But if the punctuation is part of the sentence and does not necessarily have to do with what is being quoted, then it may add something to the quote if it is placed inside. For example: When I asked her what her favorite color was, she replied "purple." Now that is syntactically correct, but it implies that she said "purple." and not just "purple" - as in saying very fast instead of relaxed. It is a silly example but this happens all the time when I am writing so I have gotten accustomed to writing this way unless I have turn something in MLA format to an English teacher... they can have fun with weird-sounding sentences.
Let's face it, typos happen, but I don't see why people don't at least read their texts before they press send. My LEAST favorite misspelling in the world is when people leave the 'r' off the end of 'your'. "Don't talk with food in you mouth." Makes me wanna punch a baby.
ReplyDeleteI HATE it when people misspell "definitely". If somebody wanted to bet that the first Facebook status containing that word would have it spelled correctly, I would call them a fool and bet my life savings against them. That is how little faith I have in my fellow classmates/friends/people I do not know but like to stalk that appear on my news feed. My personal favorite is when they put "defiantly" instead of "definitely". How exactly does one defiantly study for a test or defiantly go tanning without sustainig a serious injury? I am ashamed to be a part of a generation that relies so heavily on Auto Correct and Spell Check.
